Windows Mobile: activate WiFi at home (or friendly HotSpot) automatically

Having your new, shiny Windows Mobile phone, full of connectivity options must be a bless! Or it would be, if not the short battery life. You need to disable Bluetooth and use WiFi / GPS only when needed, right?

Not anymore.

There’s a small tool which I’ve just discovered – WiFi Locations. It allows you to automatically enable / disable WiFi or Bluetooth in selected locations. And it detects your location based on GSM (or UMTS) cell ID – no need for GPS.

It’s a battery and time (since you don’t have to tediously enable/disable WiFi at home) saver.

You can download it and see newest comments on the XDA-Developers thread.

Getting official

Today, maybe as a gift on the occasion of SysAdmin day 2009, I got a letter from the court. It officially states that “Jakub Anderwald – Yet Another Tech Blog” is a state registered magazine.

Basically, I am now a publisher and chief editor of a magazine – on the same level as country-wide magazines like Top Gear, or Playboy, except that I publish only on Internet, not on paper.

If you’re Polish, you probably know, this is an effect of a curious court decision, where, among other lines, it said that “a website is a magazine according to polish law and must be registered”. It has been widely discussed 2 years ago, mostly ignored in reality, but a couple of freaks found it to be a nice and funny way of promoting their websites – and here I am.

The same law also says that publishing a magazine without registration is a crime – so beware, all other Polish websites ;)

Here’s the court statement (in Polish, though)

Sysadmin day 2009

Here it is again!

It’s System Administrator (or SysAdmin) day 2009 – today. So grab a bottle of beer (or better a 6-pack) and head to your IT department, give the man a bottle of ale, have a chat – let him feel like a friend, not just a login on your screen.

I’m famous (well… sort of)

It’s good to be famous. It’s good to be inspirational.

Conclusion: It’s good to inspire someone to create something that will make you famous.

My part starts here:

“Commenter Jakub Anderwald notes how hard it is to send a text message to a home or work phone. I totally agree.”

It’s very nice to see that your comments are acutally being read and are inspiring others to create something. It gives the small feeling of doing something good and thinking valuable thoughts.
